Italy vs England LIVE! Nations League

Italy vs England LIVE! Nations League

England begin their World Cup countdown with Gareth Southgate desperately needing a quick-fire improvement. After a shambolic summer in the Nations League, the Three Lions boss has been questioned of late, with his team even booed off at times.

Still, and while relegation in the Nations League would be hugely disappointing, Southgate’s success in his role has been built on performances in major tournaments. While tonight’s opponents in the Italians denied him a historic European Championship win at Wembley, England have to be considered major players heading into Qatar even if recent results have been alarming.

More than anything, the optics are important here. England haven’t beaten the Italians in their own backyard since 1961 so not winning wouldn’t exactly be a disaster, but Southgate cannot afford another poor performance. Clearly, there are bigger concerns ahead, but a resounding loss inside the San Siro would damage morale even further. Keep across all of the action LIVE with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog below. Dan Kilpatrick will be providing expert analysis from Milan!

35:00 – James and Kane earning the away side two corners in quick succession, though England are yet to have a shot.

Jorginho always in space

32:00 – Rice and Bellingham leaving the Chelsea star to pick passes at will. A gap that needs tightening.

Phil Foden getting on the ball

28:00 – The City star is dropping deeper, looking to take on players and find angles.

The more he sees of the ball, the better chance England have of breaking this Italian team down.

Dan Kilpatrick at San Siro

England are seeing more of the ball but their flow is being disrupted by an aggressive Italian press. Whenever an England player threatens to make progress in Italy’s half, there’s a blue shirt on him.

England improving

19:00 – Both teams are far from their best tonight, though Italy have probaby had the better of things thus far.

England have improved from a shaky start, however, breaking forward and putting some nice passes together in the final third.

England opening up

15:00 – Italy somewhat sloppy in possession, allowing England to break.

Kane and Sterling starting to get on the ball in dangerous areas.

Dan Kilpatrick at San Siro

Gareth Southgate offered a robust defence of Harry Maguire last night but the under-pressure has made a shaky start here. In the space of a couple of minutes, Di Lorenzo got behind him and Scamacca got above him, both getting efforts on goal which were saved by Pope.

England need a reset

09:00 – Getting played through far too easily here.

Italy having the better of it

07:00 – Italy get through England’s midfield far too easily, but the West Ham star tries a shot too early and it trickles wide,
