Joe Biden says Covid pandemic is over in the US

President Joe Biden has declared the Covid pandemic “over” in the US, though he admitted the country still has “a problem” with the virus.

Speaking to CBS’s 60 minutes programme, Mr Biden said health authorities were still doing “a lot of work” to control the virus but admitted Americans had changed their behaviour.

“If you notice, no one’s wearing masks,” he said. “Everybody seems to be in pretty good shape…I think it’s changing.”

The US has suffered the highest global death toll during the pandemic, with over a million lives lost and 97.5 million infected.

However, the toll of the pandemic has diminished significantly since early in Mr Biden’s term when more than 3,000 Americans per day were dying. Recent data shows the country’s seven-day average of deaths currently stands at over 400, according to John Hopkins University.

More than one million Americans have died over the course of the pandemic – the highest global death toll from the virus.

Dr Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the current daily death toll was “unacceptably high”.

“We are not where we need to be if we’re going to be able to ‘live with the virus,’” he said.

Mr Biden spent more than two weeks isolated in the White House after two bouts with the virus, starting in July. His wife Jill contracted the virus in August.

World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said last week that the “end is in sight” for the pandemic, but still urged nations to maintain their vigilance.
