Muddy Stiletto awards: The 4 cafes that have been named the best in Bedfordshire
Four Bedfordshire cafes are in the running to win a prestigious award, a Muddy Stiletto. The Muddy Stiletto awards, also known as ‘muddies’ recognise the best small businesses across the UK.
There are lots of different categories including hotels, beauty salons, book shops, fitness instructors and children’s businesses. Each region has its own winners, with Bedfordshire in the same category as Hertfordshire.
One of the categories where four of the five finalists are based here in Bedfordshire is the best cafe award. If you live in Bedfordshire you will know that there are plenty of amazing cafes to visit, however, the following four could be crowned winners.

The Kiln – Stewartby
You can find The Kiln just a five-minute walk from Stewartby Lake. On the menu, you can find breakfasts like a full English, eggs benedict and crushed avocado on toast which are served until midday.
If you are visiting for lunch you can have burgers, fish and chips, toasties, lighter bites and more. On the drinks menu, you will find milkshakes, coffee, smoothies, tea, hot chocolate and soft drinks.
One previous diner on Facebook wrote: “I’ve been wanting to try The Kiln for a while now and it really did not disappoint. The breakfast was delicious, great menu the smashed avocado so tasty, quality ingredients. staff very helpful and efficient.”
The Hub & Spoke Café – Harlington
The Hub and Spoke Cafe describe themselves as being at the ‘heart of the community where everyone is welcome. The menu is filled with options including freshly made pizzas such as Pollo Ruspante, Diavola and Quattro Formaggi.
There are also sweet and savoury bakes such as sausage rolls, pasties, brownies, cakes and muffins. You can also get a large range of coffees, teas, smoothies and milkshakes to enjoy with your food.
On TripAdvisor one reviewer said: “I live in the local area so I’ve visited the Hub & Spoke a few times. Rob & Sue and their staff team are incredibly welcoming of customers including the four-legged furry ones. I go there for my mid week coffee boost and for a cheeky cake at the weekend & it’s always great.”
The Vardo – Bedford
The Vardo is an all-plant-based cafe in Bedford with a focus on cakes and artisan cheese. As well as serving food, The Vardo also offer meal preps, tailored juice plans, catering and occasion cakes.
Since the nominations were released, The Vardo has rebranded to Kynd. They are yet to reveal any information on what food will be on the menu.
Bridges Espresso Bar – Bedford
Bridges is a family-run espresso bar that uses all local ingredients in its coffee and serves homemade food. On the daytime menu, you can find breakfasts including buttermilk pancakes, big sharer breakfasts and vegan options.
There’s also a brunch menu and a lunch menu with sandwiches, salads and jacket potatoes, In the evening you can get nibbles as well as main dishes like king prawn linguine and leg of lamb.
One reviewer wrote: “Friendly and attentive staff, great food, amazing coffee! I highly recommend this place for breakfast, lunch and especially cocktails.”
