Paul Lawrie, Open champion in 1999 at Carnoustie, will hit the opening tee shot of the tournament at 6:35am BST, before the other 155 players in the field step up to the first tee and the wide open fairway in front of them.
Rory McIlroy is well-fancied to win his first major for eight years but he is far from alone in arriving at St Andrews with reason to be confident.

TV channel: The Open will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Golf and Main Event.
Coverage on Thursday begins across both channels at 6.30am BST, running through until 8:30pm when there is then analysis and highlights.
