Two Bedfordshire bookshops up for a prestigious Muddy Stiletto award

Two Bedfordshire bookshops have made it to the final of the Muddy Stiletto Awards. These awards were created to celebrate all of the best small, independent businesses the world has to offer.

The awards are divided up into counties, with Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire being linked. There are a number of different categories such as best cafe, beauty salon, hotel, florist, day spa and more.

The finalists have been announced, with voting now closed. In the best book shop category, two of the finalists are Bedfordshire businesses.

BOOK – Leighton Buzzard

BOOK, in Leighton Buzzard can be found just off of the high street. It’s a pretty new shop, having opened in 2021 and is currently Leighton Buzzard’s only independent bookshop.

In-store you can find books of all genres from romance to thriller, horror to classic tales. There is a focus on lifestyle books as well as children’s books, writers and illustrators. BOOK also host regular book clubs and author signings, making them more than just a shop.

One reviewer on Google wrote: “This shop for me was love at first sight. I’ve wanted an independent book shop in town for a long time and I was really happy when I found this one.

“I also love the staff, I’ve met two of them and they’re very friendly and they seemed to not be scared off from my excitement and words avalanche. They’re able to recommend books according to what you like (which is absolutely FABULOUS) and I cannot wait to finish what I’ve bought so I can go back and get more.

“My little boy also really enjoyed their selection. Go there now and buy all their books!!!!”

The Eagle Bookshop – Bedford

The Eagle Bookshop in Bedford has been around since 1991, starting off as a second-hand book store on Castle Road. After expanding as much as possible over the years, The Eagle relocated to St Peters Street in Autumn 2019.

In its newest premises, The Eagle has grown further and continues to do so. They still specialise in secondhand and rare books, however, you can now also buy brand new books from them but these are a small selection from local authors.

Some of the books instore are really eyecatching with brightly coloured covers and binding – looking like something out of a fairytale. One customer wrote on Google: “What a fantastic secondhand bookstore. A great selection of fiction and non-fiction at very reasonable prices. Well worth a visit.”
