A fire has broken out at a 10-storey construction site in Canning Town this morning, sending huge plumes of black smoke into the sky in east London.

One person has been rescued from the blaze by firefighters using a 13.5m ladder, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said.

It has deployed 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters to respond to the fire near Silvertown Way in Canning Town.

People have been advised to avoid the area as emergency services respond.

“The fire was located in a construction site consisting of 10 floors, where a ground floor commercial unit was alight.  One of the Brigade’s 64m ladder deployed to the scene as part of our response, and one person was rescued by firefighters using 13.5 metre ladder,” the LFB said.

It added: “The fire has been producing significant amounts of smoke. People in the area are advised to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area where possible.”

The brigade confirmed it received over 30 calls reporting the fire, with the first call taken at 8.23am.

Firefighters from Plaistow, Poplar, East Ham and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

An investigation into the cause of the fire, which is not yet known, is underway. There are currently no reports of any injuries, the LFB said.

Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control shortly before 9.40am. Crews will remain on scene throughout the morning.

The A1011 Silvertown Way has been closed both ways between the A13 (Canning Town Flyover) and Hallsville Road because of the blaze.
