Sunak faces revolt from Tory MPs over plans to criminalise rough sleeping

The Government is facing a revolt from Tory MPs in relation to a section of its flagship Criminal Justice Bill, which includes plans that would criminalise aspects of rough sleeping.

The proposals, which will be voted by MPs before the election, involve giving the police powers to move “nuisance” rough sleepers on fine them up to £2,500 or jail them.

Over 40 Tory MPs – including many in the moderate One Nation group – have reacted angrily to the idea, and warned party whips that they will not support these measures.
